Vyrl W. Justice, 87, 2115 First Ave SE, Cottage Grove Place, died Monday, October 8, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital of cancer. Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, with Masonic Rites by Crescent Lodge #25 to follow. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Thursday from 5PM to 7PM. The Rev. Harlen Gillespie and The Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer will officiate.
Surviving in addition to his wife Martha are a son, David L. Sherri Justice; grandsons, Joe Nancy and Jeff friend Katie; and great grandchildren, Nathan, Hailey, Natalie and Carson; and one sister, Margaret Rockafellow of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harold, Howard, and Melvin Jr.; and a sister, Alice Lincoln.
Vyrl was born May 27, 1920 in Johnson County, the son of Melvin C. and Gladys Means Justice. He attended school in Iowa City. He married Martha M. Kempf on December 29, 1945.
Vyrl was a very patriotic man and served his country during World War II. He enlisted in the 113th Calvary in 1939 and was inducted into the federal service in Iowa City January 13, 1941. He was in the machine gun squad. Over seas they landed on Omaha Beach. This was the Battle of Normandy, St Lo, Mountain Domfront, Franconville and Court Stienna, where he was wounded. He proudly received the Purple Heart and a number of other medals.
Vyrl and Martha moved to Cedar Rapids in 1953 where he worked as a General Foreman in the Electrical field. In 1961, he started his own company, Justice Electric Co. Vyrl was a very honest man and it was his goal to run his company that way. He was proud of his customers and his employees. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he served on a number of committees. He was one of the founders of Cottage Grove Place, where he called home at the time of his death. He served on St. Luke's Hospital Foundation Board and was Chairman of the United Way Campaign in 1978. Vyrl was a member of the Cedar Rapids Country Club, Downtown Rotary, Crescent Masonic Lodge #25 A.F. & A.M., the Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite where he was a 33rd degree, El Kahir Shrine, the American Legion Hanford Post #5, the V.F.W. Post #788, Elks Club, 40-8, Royal Order of Jesters, the I Club at the University of Iowa, the Malta Chapter #415 Order of Eastern Star, I.B.E.W. Local #405, N.E.C.A. and Camelot's. Vyrl received the Iowa Chapter National Electrical Contractors Industry Leadership Award in 2001. He also received the Howard Hall Excellence in Business Award in 2003 from the Chamber.
Vyrl was a kind and giving man who was devoted to his family. He enjoyed golf, fishing and he loved to travel. He and Martha enjoyed their winter home in Pompano, Florida. He and Martha also returned several times to where he served during the war.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shrine Children's Hospital, St. Paul's United Methodist Church or to St. Luke's Hospital Foundation.
We greatly appreciate the staff at Cottage Grove Place, St. Luke's Hospital, Dr. Wahle and Dr. Frank who cared for Vyrl so lovingly.
