Memorial

Josephine Thompson, 90, of 2115 First Ave SE, died Thursday, May 3, 2007, following a short illness. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 25th in All Saints Catholic Church. Inurnment is in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A luncheon will be held immediately after the funeral service. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara Thompson and Jerry Chaffin of Lawrence, Kansas, and Cynthia Gilchrest and Robert Gilchrest of Bethel, Connecticut, grandchildren, Abigail Haas and her husband Geoff Haas, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Emily Price and her husband Zachary Martin of Washington DC, Matthew Price and his wife Christine Price of Larchmont, N.Y., her great grandchildren, Christopher and Addison Haas, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and several nieces and nephews. Her beloved husband, Ernest Thompson, to whom she was married for 67 years, her parents and her sisters', Irene Kerkove and Dorothy Chamberlain, preceded her in death.

Josephine was born on November 11, 1916 in Hankinson, North Dakota. Prior to her marriage to Ernest in 1938, Josephine earned a teaching license and taught grades 1 through 8 in a country school in North Dakota. She also studied vocal and instrumental music and played both the piano and organ. She was a resident of Cedar Rapids for 65 years. Josephine served as the Director of the Catholic Family Benefit for Society from 1945 until her retirement in 1977. She was a frequent soloist for various events and served as the choir director for St Matthew's Church for a number of years. She was also a former member of the All Saints choir, the Cedar Rapids Civic Choir, the Cedar Rapids Organ Club, the Woman's Club, and several groups related to her church. Josephine was also an avid bridge player and loved animals. During her later years, she actively maintained her interests in music, literature and art. Josephine will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
