Arnold L. Espe, 83, 1521 Hidden Hollow Lane NW died Saturday, February 24, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness. Services: 11:00 A.M. Friday at Cedar Hills Community Church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Hills Community Church on Thursday from 4PM to 7PM and on Friday from 10AM to 11 AM. The Rev. Kent Landhuis will officiate. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Surviving in addition to his wife Irene are a son, Mark T. Espe Cindy of Swisher; two daughters, Ann Marie Harris and Mary K. Landhuis Kent both of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Lillian Boeke Erwin of Iowa Falls; four grandchildren, Sarah Harris, Kyle Harris Taira, Casey Espe, and Ryan Espe; a sister-in-law, Connie Espe of Des Moines; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Ohmer Girouex and Joseph Girouex; and a step-brother, Orvin Espe.
Arnold was born February 17, 1924 in McCord, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Arnie and Sarah Skrovig Espe. He married Irene K. Kruse on February 26, 1954 in Steamboat Rock, Iowa. He was a teacher at the Cedar Rapids Public Schools for 34 years until his retirement in 1986. Arnold played baseball at the University of Iowa, the Iowa National Letterman Club, the Iowa National Varsity Club, he was a member of the American Legion, the Hall of Fame-Umpire of Iowa, the Softball Coaches Association, and he volunteered for over 40 years at the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II.
