Memorial
Allen E. Nelson, 68, of 2021 B Ave NE, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, in his home following a short illness. Services at 9 AM Monday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Mark Osterhaus of St. Matthew's Catholic Church will officiate. Entombment with military honors in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday with a wake service beginning at 4 PM, and after 8:30 AM on Monday. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife Rita, his mother Mary Jane Nelson, his mother in law Loretta Nebel, two sons Kelly and Scott and wife Sandra, a daughter Sherry Shultz, four grandchildren Josh and Weston Shultz, Allyson and Jack Nelson, sister in law Joyce Nebel, two nieces and one nephew, and his special canine friend Coco, all of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his father Lloyd Nelson, his father in law Maurice Nebel, and brother in law Richard Nebel.
Allen was born October 16, 1937 in Iowa City, Iowa to Lloyd "Skip" and Mary Jane Doonan Nelson. He married Rita Nebel on May 7, 1960 in Cedar Rapids. He was a peacetime US Army Veteran. He was production controls manager at Rockwell for 33 years retiring in 1993. He was an avid sports fan and in early years collected tickets at Hawkeye games so he could see his favorite Hawkeye's play. He continued his interest by regularly attending the games every Saturday. He was a loyal St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan, attending many games at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, and enjoyed heckling Cub fans. He enjoyed fishing, boating, deer hunting, and enjoyed big band music. For 20 years he enjoyed his cabin at Delhi with family and friends.
Allen will be greatly missed by his family and everyone who knew and loved him.
Military honors by Hanford American Legion Post No 5.
A memorial fund has been established.
