Frances Keefer Menzner Niles Newman, 91, of 411 Crimson Drive NE, died Thursday, April 06, 2006, at ManorCare Health Services from complications of uterine cancer. The body has been cremated. The family will greet friends on Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. for a Celebration of Life Gathering at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home. A Private Family Burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
Survivors include her husband of 24 years, Dean; a daughter Carol fianc?, Larry Kremer Niles; a son, Stephen Pamela Menzner; five grandchildren, Bryan Herrold, Jeffrey Mickey Herrold, Ann Matt Kiesling, Jonathan fianc? Jennifer Walters Menzner, and Emily Nicholas Sternowski; three stepchildren, Craig Newman, Cheryl Rufus Roper, Brian Sharon Newman; two step grandchildren, Cory Jennifer Newman, and Casey Newman; one great grandchild; and three step great grandchildren.
Frances was born October 19, 1914 on a farm in Linn County to Frederick and Lillian Frazee Keefer. After moving to Cedar Rapids she attended old Washington High School and Coe College. She married Gilbert Menzner in 1937. He died in 1944 at Marshalltown. Frances returned to Cedar Rapids with their two sons, Frederick and Stephen and in 1946 married Leighton Niles. He died in 1978. In 1982, she married Dean E. Newman in Phoenix, Arizona and they subsequently moved to Cedar Rapids.
She was known for her pleasant appearance and demeanor. Frances worked at the cosmetic counters at Killian's and Armstrong's Department Stores and later as a representative with Avon Products. She enjoyed her friends and family and her time at her and Leighton's cabin at Lake Delhi and her retirement in Mesa, Arizona.
Frances was preceded in death by her son, Frederick, her parents, her husbands, Gilbert and Leighton, and her sister, Ruth Wolff.
The family wishes to thank the staff at ManorCare Health Services for the outstanding care and friendships they provided "Fran" the last year of her life.
