Vera Alberta Vanous, 98, of Westridge Care Center passed from this life into her eternal home Wednesday February 27, 2002 at the care center following a long illness. Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday at Turner Chapel East where friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Friday. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Pleiness of Good News Baptist Church will officiate.
Vera was a loving mother and grandmother to two daughters, Patricia Thompson of Cedar Rapids and Karen Winter of Conyers, Georgia; six grandchildren, Kathleen Wilkey, Debra Mead, David McCalley and wife Donna, Suzanne Kurka and husband David, Kristin Winter, and Matthew Winter; great grandchildren, Trevor, Thaddeus, Jeremy and wife Laurie, Jennifer and husband Brian, Benjamin, Matthew, Sean, Melinda, and Trent; and great great grandchildren, Maura, Madison, Samuel, and Nathaniel.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Edward; a daughter Virginia in 1942, four brothers and two sisters.
Vera was born February 22, 1904 in Marengo the beloved daughter of William and Katharina Getlin Brown. She married Edward J. Vanous on March 14, 1923 in Cedar Rapids, a union that lasted for 60 years until Edward's death in 1983. Vera was past president of the Fillmore Elementary PTA, was president of the Iowana Council of Campfire for 3 years, was a member of the Regional Executive Board of Campfire for 6 years, and was on the National Council of Campfire for 3 years. She was a Bluebird, Campfire, and Horizon club leader for several years; was a life member of Iowa State P.T.S.; Senior Vice President of Ladies Auxiliary WW I Veteran's; served on the Executive Board of the United Way for three years, was a charter member of Four Square Gospel Church; taught Sunday school for over 50 years; and recently was attending Good News Baptist Church.
Vera will be fondly remembered for her love of God, her love and commitment to family and friends, and her untiring zest for life.
A memorial fund has been established.
