Shirley Mae Anthony (90) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa passed away August 15, 2018 at Cottage Grove Place.  A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Marion on Tuesday August 21, 2018 at 11am.  Visitation with family will begin one hour prior to the service.  All are welcome to attend a luncheon at the church immediately following the service.

Shirley was born on March 29, 1928 in Berwyn, Illinois and was the only child of Mildred and Donald Foster.  She graduated from Morton High School in Berwyn, Illinois and attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa.

Shirley was married August 21, 1948 to the love of her life, Dr. Russell H. Anthony.  She was a kind, gracious and loving mother and grandmother of 3 children and 8 grandchildren.  Her children are: Son, Mark H.  (Margie Bray) Anthony; son Ross D. Anthony; and daughter Donna R. (Michael) Puk.

Her grandchildren are: Marcus R. Anthony, Marcia Lynn Anthony, Stephen F. Anthony, Natalie B. Anthony, Erica M. Puk, John M. Puk, Daniel R. Puk, and Haley M. Puk.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband Russell.  Shirley and Russell would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Tuesday August 21, 2018.

One of Shirley’s passions was playing cards.  If Shirley had a favorite game of cards it was bridge.   She belonged to numerous bridge clubs, and never tired of playing the game.

Shirley truly enjoyed her P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter II and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 184.

Shirley lived for the summertime, whether it be boating at Coralville Reservoir with family and friends, spending time with her G.N.O. group (Girls Night Out), or enjoying quality time around the pool with her grandchildren.

Shirley was an avid Iowa State fan. She and Russ traveled to Football and Basketball games in Ames for many years, and she continued to cheer on the Cyclones when gathering with friends at Cottage Grove Place.

Shirley will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.  Her family will always cherish their special memories of their mother and grandmother.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Shirley’s honor may be directed to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
