Graveside services will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 11am at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Garden of the Heart.

Robert was born on May 27, 1937 to Lawrence and Eva (Robinson) Kalous in Iowa City. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1956 and was a Cross Country State Champion.  In February 1957, Robert married Loretta McLain. Together they had four children, and later divorced. One of his earliest jobs was a mechanic position at Tutt’s Standard, which led to his successful and well-established career as a mechanic for more than 40 years. He was also a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 32 years. Robert served his country as a member of the United States Navy Reserves for 8 years.  He was active in many organizations, including: The Eagles Club, the Swisher American Legion, Knights of Columbus, P.W.P., John Deere Defenders Club, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NAEFE, the Swisher and Oxford American Legion, and the International Harvester Tractor Club.

“Grandpa Bob” was an avid and dedicated supporter of his children and grandchildren, attending countless band and vocal concerts, parades, sporting events, and graduations. He always told his family to never give up and always have fun. Often Robert could be found refurbishing his collection of Farmall, Allis Chalmers, and International Harvester tractors at his peaceful family farm outside of Mt. Vernon.

Robert is survived by his beloved children: Laurie Randall, Angela Hunter, Barbara (Michael) Drake, and Bob (Christy) Kalous; his significant other of 33 years Marie Taylor; 8 grandchildren: Nicole (Dan) Schaefer, Jayme Hunter, Ashley Drake, Valerie Drake, Samantha Hunter, Dillon Drake, Bailey Kalous, and Riley Kalous; 4 great-grandchildren: Addison Hunter, Avery Schaefer, Benjamin Drake, and Ayden Drake; siblings: Rosalie Kalous, Steve Kalous, brother-in-law Bob Hawkins, and aunts Mary and Helen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Dave Randall, and siblings: Patsy, Carol, Connie, and Larry.

Robert Kalous was known for his sharp wit, clever humor, humbleness, and his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He will be forever remembered as a true gentleman and a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Robert’s warm laugh and gentle smile touched the hearts of all who knew him.
