Harold L. “Smitty” Smith, 97 of Cedar Rapids died Tuesday January 17, 2017 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Services at 1:00 PM on Monday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial with military rites at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday.

Survivors include his wife Donna; a son Jerry (Donna) Caldwell of Arlington, Texas and a daughter Judy (Chuck) Phelps of Lisbon. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters Mary and Leota and brother Cecil.

Smitty was born on May 25, 1919 in Hammerville, a small town in Buchanan County, the son of Leonard and Elda Brody Smith. He married Donna D. Walton in 1952 in Las Vegas, Nevada. 

Smitty was a truck drive. He drove for Kings Concrete for several years and was an independent driver for over 32 years retiring in 1980. Smitty enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, going to the casino and traveling with Donna in their RV throughout the United States. He proudly served in the Navy during WWII as a naval aviator. 

Smitty was a very respected, generous and giving man, He had a great sence of humor and enjoyed telling jokes. His greatest joy however was the time spent with his beloved family and many friends.
