John Eppler Gutz died Sunday, December 3, 2017, at his home. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of John’s life at 2 p.m. Friday, January 12, 2018, at Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet John’s friends Thursday evening January 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Christ Church and one hour prior to the service. A private inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Cemetery.

John is preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Kathryn Falb Gutz. Survivors include daughters Julia Gutz (Mark) Moller of Minnetonka, MN and Jennifer (Paul) Benson of Maple Grove, MN; grandchildren Anna Kathryn Joelle Moller, John David and Grace Kathryn Benson; three sisters Janet Way of Evergreen, CO, Rayne Ragan of Scottsdale, AZ, Lois (Eugene) Coon of Iowa City; two brothers-in-law, John O. (Sally) Falb of West Union, and Mark C. (Cheryl) Falb of Dubuque, and a sister-in-law Mary McConkie Falb (Jim) Brinda of Scottsdale, AZ. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. 
Born in Hampton, IA, to Eppler and Elsie Gutz, John  spent many hours playing sports with friends, duck and pheasant hunting, and fishing on Iowa lakes. Following high school, John attended the University of Iowa, and graduated from Upper Iowa University with a B.A. degree in business administration in 1958. 

John served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 and married Kathryn Falb Gutz in 1962. They made their home in Cedar Rapids where John first worked for Rockwell Collins. He spent the remainder of his career in sales with Wagners Printers in Cedar Rapids for more than 30 years.

John had a wide-range of interests and was active in the community: Christ Episcopal Church, the Exchange Club, Delta Upsilon Fraternity and Ducks Unlimited. He was a beloved grandfather, an avid birdwatcher, enjoyed playing golf, working crossword puzzles and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.  He will be remembered for his warm sense of humor and clever wit. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to: Upper Iowa University, Christ Episcopal Church; the University of Iowa. or KCCK Jazz 88.3
