MARY KATHRYN (HOYLAND) MICHALICEK

Mary Michalicek, DAUGHTER OF, Adelbert and Pearl (Junker) Hoyland

Mary Michalicek was born on January 16, 1928, to Adelbert and Pearl (Junker) Hoyland in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Mary passed away on April 17, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.  She was 89 years of age.

She was united in marriage on March 26, 1948 to the late Robert (Bob) Michalicek, who passed away on November 4, 2003.

Mary and Bob attended Central Park Presbyterian Church, which provided a rich environment for Sunday school and community, as they raised their five children.  They then joined Faith Bible Church, enjoying the rest of their lives as active congregants.  Faith Bible Elderly Outreach provided continued assistance and care to Mary throughout the years and a special relationship with Petra Cotes and Ken Tschopp became a vital part of her life.

Mary is survived by her daughters Cathy Carlson and Sherry Macho (with the late Pat Macho), who live in New Mexico, her sons Steven Michalicek (with Jennifer Cole-Baker) and Michael Michalicek, who live in Iowa and her daughters-in-law Karolyn Wagner and Virginia Michalicek. Her third son, Jeff, passed away on December 20, 1987.  She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 11 step grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

Mary graduated from Franklin High School in 1946, receiving honors in the Girls Athletic Association and Latin Club.  She attended Cedar Rapids Business College and began work at Iowa Manufacturing Company.  Most of her time was spent raising 5 children and finding ways to make ends meet; however, she found time to remain active in the church, PTA, and election committees and continued part-time work as a realtor and sales rep for Nutrilite.  Her interests included horticulture, cooking, medicine, square dancing and brainteasers, such as crossword and Sudoku puzzles.

For those that knew Mary, they would say that she is best known for her faith in God, commitment to family, courageous spirit, strong mental acuity and can-do attitude.  She valued all people highly and equally, was an easy conversationalist, and possessed a gentle spirit and gracious heart.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Faith Bible Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with interment at Cedar Memorial, next to Bob.  A reception will follow at Faith Bible Church.  Pastor Brian Hill of Faith Bible Church will officiate.

Memorials in Mary's name may be made to Faith Bible Church and the Boys and Girls Club of America.
