John Louis Markham, Jr., 92, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, September 19, 2016.  A visitation will be held on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.    The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories and will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Curt Moermond of Grace Episcopal Church.  Interment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the Cedar Memorial Family Center.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Frances, and his six children:  Lisa (Mike) Miller of Iowa City, Mary (Steve) Clarke of Urbandale, David (Kathy) Markham, Beth (Leonard) Clay, Julie (Dan) Dolphin, and Jim (Angie) Markham, all of Cedar Rapids.  Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lois Mae Pearson.

John was born December 15, 1923 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of John and Elma (Revelle) Markham.  He married Frances Irene Nesheim on August 29, 1954 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids.  John graduated from Davenport High School.  He served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1942-1946.  He received his BA and MA from the University of Iowa.  John was a teacher for the Cedar Rapids Community School District for 35 years.  He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and also attended Christ Church with Frances in his last years.

John enjoyed music, books, movies, walking, traveling, working in his yard, building things, and family get-togethers.  John and Frances were long-time supporters of fine arts in Cedar Rapids and supported the Cedar Rapids’ Symphony, Red Cedar Chamber group, and the Community Concert Series.
