James D. Long, 65, died Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at his home in Rockford, IL, following a long illness. Per Jim’s wishes, no services will be held. Inurnment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, IA at a later date.

Survivors include his sister, Sarah (Rich) Rheinschmidt of Cedar Rapids, IA; brother, Dave (Roz) Long of New Raymer, CO; nephews, Scott (Erica) and their children, Molly, Kathryn, and Jackson of Cedar Rapids, IA, Mark Rheinschmidt of West Des Moines, IA, Andrew Jackson and David Robert James Long of New Raymer, CO. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jackson and Betty Long.

Jim was born on September 6, 1950 in Cedar Rapids, IA. He attended Kennedy High School and in 1968 earned the State Gymnastics All-Around Championship, becoming the first student to earn a state award in sports for the newly opened school. He was inducted to the Kennedy High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.

Jim attended the University of Iowa, served in the US Army from 1970 to 1973, and then attended Utah State University. He then worked for Nissen Gymnastics Company (Nissen/Universal). From 1984 until 2002, he was a sales representative with H.B. Fuller Co. and then Seibert Powder Coatings retiring in 2014.

Jim enjoyed his hobbies of aviation, canoeing, camping, and attending car races. Over the past twenty-five years in Rockford, IL, he built a close relationship with a group of cherished friends. His family and friends all share wonderful memories of time spent with Jim.
