Paul R. Hutchins, age 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, July 2, 2015 at Mercy Hospital.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2015 at St. Matthew Catholic Church.  Visitation will take place from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home where a prayer service will begin at 5:30 p.m.  Interment with military honors will take place at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Otter Creek, Iowa. 

Paul was born April 28, 1933 in Otter Creek, Iowa to Albert and Marie (Small) Hutchins.  He served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War, after which he attended Mt. Mercy College.  Seven months after his discharge from the service, Paul was united in marriage to Rita Crawford on August 18, 1956 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.  To this union three children were born.

Paul worked as an engineer at Iowa Manufacturing for thirty-one years, until his retirement in 1996.  He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, where he was active in the Holy Name Society.  He was also a member of St. Lawrence Parish in Otter Creek.  Paul was active with the Boy Scouts of America for nineteen years.  He loved to travel and play cards; he especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends at “The Farm,” the family farm in Otter Creek.

Paul is survived by his wife of nearly fifty-nine years, Rita; sons Gary (Judy) Hutchins of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin and Daniel (Tina) Hutchins of Escondido, California; son-in-law Rodney Grandon of Falls Church, Virginia; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nephews Steve Wirtz of Naples, Florida and Philip (Laurie) Wirtz of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Susanne Grandon in 2004; brother Vince Hutchins; and niece Mary Ford.
