John Ira Morehead, age 88, of Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Funeral services will take place at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2015 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories officiated by Certified Celebrant Dr. Jim Coyle.  A visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Monday at the chapel.  Interment with military honors will take place at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

John was born June 19, 1927 in Cedar Rapids to Victor Ira and Gertrude Florence (Kimball) Morehead.  After attending school, he served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War.  John was a jack-of-all-trades, and enjoyed working independently doing lawn care and custodial work.  In his later years, he expressed his artistic side by making fly-ties by hand and supplying them to local sporting goods stores.

John was a member of the American Legion, and was a very patriotic individual.  He enjoyed contributing to charitable organizations that supported veterans and active duty military alike, especially the Wounded Warrior Project.  He was a lifelong learner who enjoyed reading medical reference books.  He was a very generous and selfless man, and will be deeply missed.

John is survived by three siblings: Mary Morgan Squires of Marion; Byron Morehead; and Rose Davis, both of Cedar Rapids; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Richard and William Morehead.

Memorial contributions in John’s name may be made to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown or the Wounded Warrior Project.
