Kathyrn Marie Savel passed away peacefully on February 20, 2015 of natural causes at the age of 99 years.  She had recently moved to Clinton, Iowa.  She became a resident at Bickford Assisted Living before entering hospice at her daughter’s home. 

Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Funeral Park Home in Cedar Rapids, IA.  The funeral will be on Thursday, February 26 at 1:00 p.m.  at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Inurnment: Private at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

On August 6, 1915, Kathyrn Marie Knutson was born on a farm in Mower County, Minnesota to Chris and Ellen Knutson. She was the oldest of 3 children and attended grade school in Rose Creek and Adams Consolidated schools in Minnesota.  After the family moved to Charles City, she graduated from high school in June of 1932.  She attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids on a scholarship graduating cum laude with a major in Home Economics in 1936. 

After teaching Home Economics and science at Geneseo Consolidated School, she married Milo J. Savel of Cedar Rapids on September 25, 1937 in Charles City.  They had 3 children: Robert John, Mary Ellen, and William Joseph.  They lived at 241-18th St. N.W. in Cedar Rapids for 50 years until moving to Greenwood Terrace of Methwick Retirement Community on August 30, 1989.

She worked on the Cedar Rapids Election Board for 40 years as well as serving as a substitute teacher for the Cedar Rapids Community School District.  She was employed by the Department of Labor for 20 years gathering statistics for the Consumer Price Index.

She was an active member of many clubs and organizations including plus 60 year member of Postal Auxiliary as well as Mizpah Circle of King’s Daughters and Sons, Parent Teachers, and Embroiders Guild of America.  

When she wasn’t cooking or sewing, she enjoyed playing bridge, “500”, working crossword puzzles, and entertaining friends and relatives.  She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Preceding Kathyrn in death were her parents, brothers, William and Paul, her husband, and a son, Robert.

Survivors include her daughter Mary (Ray) Pirch, of Camanche, IA, a son William (Janice) Savel, of Cedar Rapids, IA, and grandchildren: Debbie (Tim) Theriault, of Granger, IN, Amy (Tom) Hauser, of The Woodlands, TX, Maj. Andrew (Elizabeth) Cornwell, of Colorado Springs, CO, Stacey (Mike) McIntosh, of Camanche, IA, and Lindsey Savel, of Cedar Rapids, IA, and great grandchildren: Holden Theriault, Ross Hauser, Nicole Heiser, Hannah Theriault, Sara Hauser, and Cassandra Cornwell.

Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice of Clinton/Cedar Rapids, American Heart Association, or Trinity United Methodist Church.
