Russell Warren Conkling, 93, passed away Sunday, November 9, at Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids.
Born on August 21st 1921 to Olga Schnabel Conkling and Mark Leroy Conkling in Des Moines Iowa.
He was the youngest of four sons, Frank and Marie Conkling Norwalk Iowa (deceased) Dwight and Harriet Conkling Norwalk Iowa (deceased) and Mark Conkling Des Moines Iowa (deceased).
Russ attended grades K-12 in the Des Moines public schools, attended college and Pre- medical school at the University of Iowa from 1939-1946. Served in the United States Army Medical Corps. 1946-47 at Brooks General Hospital, Sam Houston Texas. And 1947-48 Percy Jones General Hospital Battle Creek Michigan. Post Graduate Surgical Training at Detroit Receiving Hospital – Detroit Michigan. 1948-1949, and U.S. V.A. Hospital Des Moines Iowa. 1949-1950, University Hospitals, Iowa City Iowa. 1950-1952.
Russ’s medical practice consisted of - U.S.V.A. Hospital, Iowa City Iowa Asst. Chief of Surgical Service 1952-1955. General Surgery private practice Newton Iowa 1956-1964, General Surgery Private Practice partnership with Newell Ingle M.D. Cedar Rapids Iowa. 1950-1995. Retired from Medical Practice in January 1995.
Memberships Included; Diplomat, American Board of Surgery 1955. Linn County Medical Association, Iowa Medical Association, American Medical Association, Cedar Rapids Country Club, El Kahir Shrine Temple, Royal Order of Jesters, Honorary Staff membership of Mercy Hospital Cedar Rapids Iowa and St Lukes Hospital Cedar Rapids Iowa, and Duck Unlimited.
Russ’s special Interests Included Breeding and Sales of Thoroughbred Horses from 1974-1999 and Hunting and Fishing.
Russ was preceded in death by his wife Claris Conkling.
Russ is survived by Sons: William L. Conkling, Palm Springs California. James S. Conkling, Middletown Delaware. Jeffrey R. Conkling Chanhassen Minnesota. Three Granddaughters: Margaret Elizabeth Conkling, Louisville Kentucky. Morgan Rae Conkling, Middletown Delaware. Sara James Conkling Middletown Delaware. And many nieces and nephews.
