Memorial

Gordon Alfred Cook, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died on Friday November 21, 2014 at Hallmar Residential Care Center after a brave journey through Alzheimer’s disease. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with Memorial Services at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Julie Schuett.

Gordon is survived by his brother Roger Cook of Fort Collins, CO, son Bradley and wife Kalyn, of Marion, daughter Beth and husband Bruce Peters of Wichita, KS, three grandchildren, Lindsey Kay Cook of Cedar Rapids, Justin and wife Lindsay Jo Cook of Andover, Kansas and A1C Eric Peters, of USAF Randolph AFB, and a great grandson due in March. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Lloyd and Anna Cook and his wife Marilyn.

Gordon was born to E. Lloyd and Anna Cook on August 28, 1926 in Omaha Nebraska. He graduated from Benson High, Omaha, NE, then graduated from Iowa State College Class of 1948 in Electrical Engineering.  After graduation, he started working for Iowa Electric Light and Power Company in Cedar Rapids, IA, where he was employed until his retirement in 1991. 

Gordon married the love of his life, Marilyn Wilson on July 12, 1952.  They celebrated 47 years together.  Gordon was a member of Masonic Mount Hermon Lodge, IEEE, and in retirement SkyHawk Radio Airplane Club. He had a passion for early electrical appliances, building his own radios and televisions, aviation, and traveling with his family.  He was also active in St Luke’s Hospital Festival of Trees, the Indian Creek Nature Center, assisted teachers in the Cedar Rapids School System with science classes and judged at Invention Convention. 

Gordon’s family wishes to express their deep and sincere appreciation to the loving staff at Hallmar and Mercy Hospice who so tenderly cared for him during the past few years.  

The family requests that memorials be sent to ISU College of Engineering or the Alzheimer’s Association.
