Jerry Patton Smith, 77, of Cedar Rapids, passed away, Wednesday, December 10, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Cedar Hills Community Church with the Rev. Kent Landhuis officiating. Visitation will be from 10-11 am Saturday at the church. Private inurnment with military rights will take place in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Surviving are his two children, Doug Smith (Debbie Schall) of Cedar Rapids and Kathy (Robert) Ebeling of Marion; grandchildren, Megan, Spencer, and Tanner Smith and Michael Ebeling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Lou in 2010, son Jeffery Smith, and brother, William Smith.

Jerry Patton Smith was born June 27, 1937 in Ottumwa, where he was raised. He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Belvel on April 4, 1958 in Lancaster, MO. He and his wife moved to Cedar Rapids in 2001 to be near their two children and their families. Jerry worked at John Deere & Co. from 1955 until retiring in 1997. He served in the Army Reserves for 8 years. Jerry enjoyed wood working, restoring his 1953 Ford Jubilee tractor, and spending time with his family.

Jerry was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Cedar Hills Community Church in Jerry’s honor. 

The family extends their appreciation to all of the caring doctors and nurses at Hall-Perrine Cancer Center and Mercy Medical Center for their tender care and guidance in their time of transition.
