Sally A. Hoegen, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday August 30, 2014. A Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. 

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Hoegen-Simmons and husband Rick of Cedar Rapids, daughter-in-law, Barbara Hoegen of Gigg Harbor, Washington, her grandchildren; Sarah Simmons of Des Moines, Heather Simmons of Cedar Rapids, Ian Arlo Hoegen, Harry Hoegen and Dylan Hoegen all of Gigg Harbor, Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Tom and a sister, Mary Zuercher.

Sall was born March 1, 1927, the daughter of Dr. Arlo and Grace Zuercher. She married Joseph Thomas Hoegen on March 12, 1949 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She will always be remembered as one of our city’s most active volunteers through the years, as a very successful realtor with her late husband, Tom Hoegen and as one of Cedar Rapids sharpest bridge players. Sally served as President of the Kenwood Elementary School PTA, when her children attended classes there in the 1950’s. Sally is a graduate of Franklin School in Cedar Rapids and also the University of Iowa. She lived briefly in Champaign, Illinois, while her husband taught for the military at the university there. Upon returning to Cedar Rapids, Sally became very active in Junior League, serving as chapter’s President in 1965-1967. During her years in Junior League, she was particularly interested in any projects dealing with health issues, and she is the one who succeeded in reducing the presidential term to one year. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend and will be greatly missed by all.
