Loretta Kinzie passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, August 24, 2014 at the age of 97. A funeral service will be held 3pm, Thursday, August 28, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. A visitation will begin at 2pm prior to the service.

She was born Loretta Loughlin on July 29, 1917 and raised in the South Chicago neighborhood of St. Brendan Parish.  She grew-up surrounded by her extended family in that lively Irish Catholic neighborhood.  Loretta graduated from Parker High and Jackson Park School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.  She often reminisced fondly about life in the 1920’s, ‘30’s and ‘40’s in her beloved Chicago.

Loretta and her husband Don moved to Cedar Rapids in the 1960’s where they shared a wonderful life together.

Loretta was a voracious reader and followed politics closely.  She was a talented needle worker, often giving gifts made from her delicate handiwork.  In later years she enjoyed visits to and from relatives and took trips to Europe, including Ireland.  She was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church and a supporter of the Xavier Foundation.

In her passing, Loretta joins her husband:  Don and their dog Tiny, parents: James R. and Loretta (Driscoll) Loughlin, older brother: John C., grandma: Margaret Driscoll, close cousin: Sr. Patricia Eileen Consier OP, and aunts:  “-Nett” (Consier), “Jo” and “Glad” Loughlin, and: many other relatives.

She is survived by her best friend Garlene Knight, her neighbors of 42 years: the Knight family, caregivers and friends at Higley Mansion Care Center and Promise House, and St. Pius Visitor:  Pat Day.  Also, the many other neighbors and acquaintances who enjoyed friendship with Loretta and Don through the years.
