Richard P. Louvar, 97, passed away peacefully at Northbrook Manor on Tuesday April 1, 2014. Services with military rites at 3:00 PM on Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Entombment in the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from Noon until 2:00 PM on Saturday.

Survivors include his two sons, Dr. Richard D. (Barbara) and Gary (Kathy) all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Dr. Melissa (Shawn) Reeves of Charlotte, NC., Jennifer (Shawn) McRae of Cedar Rapids, Kyle (Nicole) Louvar of Bellaire, TX, Jon (Tricia) Louvar of Sisters, Oregon, and Jack (Jill) Louvar of Brandon, and 10 great grandchildren along with his brother Ernest of Merritt Island, Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife Frances, sister Georgia and his parents.

Born March 30, 1917 in Shueyville. Richard was the son of John C. and Mary (Kroul) Louvar. Richard was a long time farmer in Cedar Rapids and served on the ASCS Committee for several years. He owned and operated Northbrook Golf Course (now St. Andrews GC) having built the original 9 holes with his sons. He served as president of the Iowa Golf Course Superintendent Association and was also named Superintendent of the Year in 1972. Richard worked with his son Gary in the golf business up to the age of 92 as a city volunteer grilling and enjoying time with the golfers.

Richard married Frances Coufal on August 6, 1942 in Ely. She preceded him in death on March 7, 1989.
Richard served in the Navy during WWII and survived 8 days on a life raft after his ship, the S.S. Montanan was torpedoed. Richard was a member of Echo Hill Presbyterian Church.

Richard loved his family dearly and enjoyed times spent trout fishing, visiting his grandchildren, and attending Hawkeye football games until he was 89. He was an honorable man loved by everyone he met and his genuine kindness and generosity will be missed by those he touched.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the G.I.V.E. (Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere) Foundation for wounded veterans.
